The retina is not simply a camera that forwards pixels. Its output is already a transformed representation of the visual scene. What are the relevant constraints behind that transformation—metabolic cost, limited bandwidth, task demands, noise, or some combination?
A useful way to frame the question: what information is preserved, what is discarded, and how do those choices change across ganglion-cell types and visual contexts?
