Why did the spreadsheet win?

Excel probably has more users than every programming language combined, and most of them wouldn’t say they write code.
No real control flow, no abstraction to speak of, an error model that amounts to hoping. It still beat everything built to replace it. My guess is that you see all your data and all your intermediate results at once, always, and almost nothing else works that way.
